Instant Goddess gets ready for razzle, dazzle and Christmas on a plate…

The Instant Goddess household is feeling festive…the chocolate advent calendars have arrived (thank you Mummy dearest in the UK); I’ve also managed to purchase one of the few remaining Candy Coloured Countdown Advent Calendars by Benefit (thank you Through the Looking Glass for giving me the vital heads up before they sold out in HK) and I have to admit, I’m probably more excited about opening up my Benefit goodies than chowing down on the super deluxe Lindt chocs (sorry Mum!), but this certainly is shaping up to be a very, fine and decadent Advent… oh and the Christmas Tree is on order (almost).

So, what with the advent of Advent and all things festive, this week Instant Goddess has been asking herself, can a Christmas jumper be cool? You decide….

Top left: New Look Santa Jumper $378.64 from ASOS ; Top right: ASOS jumper with Snowflake patch on elbow $333.34; Bottom left: Jane Norman Santa Baby jumper $462 (approx.) from House of Fraser and Bottom right: Warehouse sequin robin jumper  $510 (approx.) from House of Fraser

And what will Mr Instant Goddess be wearing? I amused myself greatly with this one (currently on order from ASOS due to arrive any day now…but shhhh(!) don’t tell him as it’s a SURPRISE!).

ASOSChristmasElfJumperASOS Christmas jumper with Elf Design $425 (approx.)

Oh the razzle and dazzle!

And of course, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a razzle, dazzle party outfit on order. Instant Goddess is loving the emergence of the glam jumpsuit… think rich opulent fabrics with all that sparkles be it glitter or sequin.

4. Jumpsuit Collage

From left to right: Eku playsuit £130 (approx. $1580) Virgos Lounge, Glitter leaf wrap jumpsuit £38 (approx. $460) Topshop and available in store in Central, and French Connection cosmic sparkle jumpsuit $2727 from ASOS

And if you’re not brave enough to deck yourself out in an all-in-one number, then it has to be a party dress. Instant Goddess is loving the ASOS BLACK range… think ASOS but far more upscale and they do love a bit of evening embellishment and we know how much the Instant Goddess loves a bit of embellishment! Can you guess which one made it into the Instant Goddess shopping trolley?!

Phase 8

If you like to try before you buy, and you’re looking for a party dress option then make a visit to Phase 8’s newly opened shop in the IFC. Previously, Phase 8 was only available by mail order via the likes of House of Fraser for us Hong Kongers, so it’s great to see another high street name reclaiming some of the expensive shop space in the IFC. BUT and here comes the big BUT, once again, as with the majority of other big high street names that come and go in HK, Phase 8 have failed to keep the prices on a par with the UK. But if you’re in a fashion fix and are willing to stump up or just simply want to try, but then buy online Phase 8 is an option. To give you an idea of the price hike the dress below retails in-store at $2750 but is available online for $2050 from House of Fraser.

By popular demand, I give you Baked Camembert with Apples and Cranberries, served with Toasted Baguette Slices. And I say by popular demand, as I threw a girls-only dinner party on Friday night and everyone asked for this recipe to be in this week’s Instant Goddess post…and as one of them put it…“this really is Christmas on a plate” … how fitting! Oh and special thanks to the Sis-in-Law in the UK who first introduced me to this crowd-pleaser when we were back there last month.

  • 1 eating apple
  • 15g/ ½ oz butter or margarine
  • 25g/1 oz walnut halves
  • 25g/1 oz dried cranberries
  • 1 tbsp light soft brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 round (250g) Camembert cheese (I used President available in Wellcome)
  • 1 French stick
  • 2-3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic

  1. Preheat oven to 180*C/350*F/Gas 4. Core and wedge apple then coarsely chop apple wedges and walnuts.
  2. Melt butter in small saucepan add apple, walnuts, cranberries, soft brown sugar and cinnamon; mix gently. Remove from heat.
  3. Cut Camembert in half horizontally. Place one half of Camembert (rind side down) either place in wooden box that Camembert came in (but make sure any paper or cardboard has been removed!) or place in small shallow ovenproof dish (mini flan dish as shown or pie dish will do). Spoon half of apple mixture onto bottom half of Camembert, spreading evenly. Top with remaining half of Camembert, rind side up. Then spoon remaining apple mixture over the top. Place dish or box on baking sheet.
  4. Slice French Stick into 1cm slices. Arrange slices, slightly overlapping, around Camembert on baking sheet. Put oil in a bowl and crush garlic into it. Brush bread slices lightly with olive oil.
  5. Bake 10-12 minutes (I actually think it could take 15 mins and will cook it for longer next time to get more goo!), or until baguette slices are crisp and golden on top and Camembert begins to soften. Stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Yogi tea saying of the week: “Always be pure, simple and honest”.

Instant Goddess saying of the week: “Razzle, dazzle and goo!”.

Instant Goddess returns to cool

Apologies for the blip in Instant Goddess communications…she has been a travelling and is just back from a trip to the UK which of course got her thinking about winter warmers with the clocks going back in the UK and the generally MUCH cooler temperatures. Although it did get up to 23 degrees on Halloween in Covent Garden, in fact, the hottest Halloween on record in the UK, so one can’t complain really, can one (said with an English plum in one’s mouth)?!

So, what got the shopping radar twitching? As we know the UK has a great selection of High Street fashion, but fear not, everything in the UK that’s listed here is available online.

With temperatures already starting to cool noticeably here in HK it won’t be too long before you’re reaching for a coat, and if you’re travelling to cooler climes for Christmas then get ready with these fabulously faux furs from River Island which has to be one of the best online destinations for affordable, on trend coats at the moment. River Island delivers to HK for approx. $120 and shipping takes approx. 10 days.

Top: Khaki leather look panel parka £115 and bottom: Grey leather look faux fur jacket £75 both River Island

Top: Grey leather look faux fur waterfall jacket £90 and bottom: Beige faux sheepskin longline coat £95 both River Island

And if you’re not an online shopper (how can you possibly survive in this barren high street land of affordable fashion that is Hong Kong?!) or can’t wait won’t wait for an online delivery, Zara has these options currently in store…yep it’s all about faux fur and the parka this season, Goddesses!

Left and top left: Round neck fur jacket $899, bottom right: Parka with detachable quilted lining $1499 both Zara

And if the shoe fits…don’t delay, buy, buy, buy!

I do love a Kurt Geiger shoe especially when it comes in red leopard print…while struggling through Terminal 5 at Heathrow with the tot in tow I saw these but alas didn’t have the energy nor baggage space to purchase. But I’ve since discovered that KG deliver to HK for £10 (approx $120) within 3-7 working days…woo hoo!

Bum lifting and leg slimming jeans

Yep…you read right, bum lifting and leg slimming jeans and they work! Instant Goddess is all over these from Next. And in case you didn’t know, Next deliver in 4 working days to Hong Kong and delivery is free!

Lift slim and shape skinny jeans in washed grey $472, by Next

Function and fashion

Instant Goddess does love a wedge boot…it means that you can dart around to your heart’s content without your trotters suffering and, of course, a wedge also elongates the leg in those skinny jeans which means function and fashion rolled into one. Instant Goddess is loving these grey and navy blue wedges from Boden and if you’ve got the character for them then it has to be the leopard! Boden deliver to HK for £12 (approx $150) and deliveries take 12-14 days.

Collage 3

Wedge stretch boots £99 all from Boden

While we’re on the subject of boots, I also stumbled across these over the knee block heel boots from Next. They come in black or grey and are very reasonably priced at $627… so they’re a no brainer, but what colour will you choose, both?! A friend says they’re too sexy for daywear. Instant Goddess says nonsense.

Beaten by the dreaded jetlag, Instant Goddess was sad to miss Chicameo’s pop up shop last week at 10 Chancery Lane, but fear not they will be at the next Conrad Fair on 1 December and you can also shop online with them. What’s more shipping is free in HK! For the uninitiated, Instant Goddess has been following this home spun label since its launch back in 2011 and is very happy to see each collection going from strength to strength. As you know Instant Goddess is a huge fan of embellishment and luxe detailing so she was delighted to see so much of it in the current Chicameo collection. Instant Goddess must haves are:

This week it’s Meatball Stroganoff over on the BBC’s Good Food website. This dish is a real crowd pleaser and so easy to make especially when you cheat by using readymade meatballs and if you want to pep it up a bit it definitely benefits from the addition of Worcester Sauce or HP Sauce. Mmmm…we’re LOVIN’ it in the Instant Goddess household!

Instant Goddess is still lounging but transitioning…

It seems frivolous to be writing about fashion when we’ve seen so much unrest on the streets of Hong Kong. But should things ever get back to some sort of normality (and here’s hoping by the bucketful), and you feel like splashing some cash on fash (oh yes please let the pennies rain down), here are some morsels to get those purse strings twitching…

Photo 1 (2)Styles above from Zenvara prices range from $600 to $1000 (ish)

Instant Goddess does love to lounge in style especially when it’s affordable style. The styles above are all from ZenvarA HK, a local label specialising in stylish but affordable resort wear and this is definitely one to watch in the upcoming months with all the festive pop-up shops and fairs just around the corner and even more so if you’re jetting off to sunny climes for Christmas. For more information you can contact the founder, Anita Beavis, on 9586 3459 or at Dates for the diary with venues where you’ll be able to get your ZenvarA fix are:

  •  The Hebe Haven 24HR Charity Dinghy Race Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 2:00pm
  • The Conrad Christmas Fair Monday, November 3, 2014 at 10:00am
  •  AWA Charity Bazaar 2014 Friday, November 14, 2014 at 10:00am

This week it’s Jamie Oliver’s Hit n Run Traybaked Chicken…a shove it all in the one dish, then slam in the oven, and simply serve with salad and mop up the glorious juices with crusty bread – you couldn’t get more Instant Goddess friendly than that if you tried…but oh you can as it’s relatively low cal as well…”I feel like chicken tonight” sung to Unilever’s 1990’s advertising tune for the Chicken Tonight sauces…ok, I’ve probably lost you now but at least you don’t have to listen to me sing for your supper.

Instant Goddess lounges in summer style and revolves into Winter…

Instant Goddess is still desperately clinging on to the last days of summer and still hankering after summer frocks. Yes, Yes I know it’s September and in the fashion world you should be decked out in all your Winter garb by now BUT with temperatures still regularly in the 30s here in Hong Kong your skin just simply needs to breathe…so if there’s still room in the summer wardrobe then Instant Goddess is LOVING the resort and swimwear at Vamastyle. Originally based in Singapore… this label knows all about dressing and surviving in the heat. The founder Kaitie Manani now finds herself back in Hong Kong ready, willing and able to dress and impress us with Vamastyle’s signature eye catching prints but in oh-sopractical and stylish designs.

Instant Goddess loves the frocks in the latest Sunseeker collection for every day style, but friends with the legs sans cellulite (not me) loved the shorts and everyone loved the cut of the swimwear. Ooooh and we shouldn’t forget to mention the lightweight trousers/pants in buzzy prints perfect for protecting you from those hungry mosquitos.

You can buy online at Vamastyle and shipping is free. And if you’re unsure or need further advice, email Kaitie before you buy as she’ll be able to advise from your measurements as to what will work for you.

A date for the diary: The next Vamastyle pop up shop will be on 21, 22, 23 November at Little Square, 21 Square Street, Sheung Wan.

Instant Goddess does LOVE it when she finds a new (well new to her anyway) website that ships to Hong Kong…enter US based Revolve similar to the likes of Shopbop and ASOS and well stocked with every fashion item you could possibly want including bags, shoes, jewellery plus of course the usual wide range of clothing from high end designers to the more reasonably priced. Revolve also stock beauty favourites including Butter of London and Stila. They also do good shoe from greats including Sam Edelman and Schutz.

Shipping is free to Hong Kong on orders over $100 (USD) so don’t be shy…load up! For orders less than $100 (USD) shipping costs a flat rate of $10(USD).

This week we’re loving the BLT Salad courtesy of You know what they say from humble beginnings come great things and this certainly applies to this salad…simple ingredients but big on flavour and the dressing is a winner too. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em…

As we know the shops have long gone to A/W 14 some even as early as late July taking summer right from beneath us long before it was over (much to the disgust of Instant Goddess!).

And as we also know, here in Hong Kong the summer temperatures will stay, sometimes even well into December, and the last thing you’ll feel like donning are your winter woollies but if you are super-duper organised and looking for some winter wardrobe fillers here are some ideas to get those purse strings twitching…so if you can’t beat ’em you might as well join ’em and begin to embrace A/W 14.

Photo 1. WinterCoverUps1

Left: Evelyn gilet approx. $615  from Monsoon, top right: Nude leather turtle neck biker leather jacket $1885 and bottom right: Teal geometric floral trim boxy jacket approx. $1005, both by River Island

Shipping notes: UK high street favourite River Island ships to Hong Kong for approx. $120 and shipping takes approx. 10 days. Monsoon ships to Hong Kong and delivery is free on orders over 75 GBP (approx. $950).

Photo 2. WinterWarmers2

Left: One for the Brits…Instant Goddess couldn’t resist this shout out to Del Boy (from UK TV Gold hit Only Fools and Horses) let me flog you a second hand watch…I mean coat: Faux fur coat in vintage shearling $1130 from ASOS; top right Brown leather-look sleeves faux fur jacket approx. $950 by River Island and bottom right: Jumper with lace inserts approx. $530 by ASOS.

Worth a second look and a close up

For when it cools down Instant Goddess is loving this lace contrast jumpsuit from ASOS, sling on one of the winter cover ups above and you’ll be warm and chic before you can say make mine a mulled wine.

Photo 3. ASOS Lace Contrast Jumpsuit

Lace contrast jumpsuit approx. $750 from ASOS

Oh Pastel!

Pastels are still going strong into A/W 14 and given the automatic tendency to go all dark and dreary a little pastel pick me up will make you feel as a fresh as a daisy and even better will work now…team this light blue embellished skirt from River Island with a crisp white tank for now or a pale blue form fitting sweater for Winter. Oh and well done River Island for embellishing all the way around…no cheapskate manufacturing shortcuts here. And of course, Instant Goddess couldn’t resist throwing in these cheeky bargainous slingbacks from New Look.

Photo 4. Pastelcollage

Left: Light blue embellished midi skirt approx. $950 from River Island, Silver embellished point sling backs $315 from New Look.

Shipping notes: New Look delivers to Hong Kong. Deliveries take approx. 10 days and is free over 55GBP (approx $690).

Sunnyside up

But if you’re a true Instant Goddess living in the heat of the moment (pun intended) you’ll still be hankering after summer dresses to keep you cool as temperatures still regularly sore into the 30s here in the Kong and just the mere thought of faux fur and leather will make you break into a sweat.

So, there’s not much out there in the shops BUT have no fear you can still find summery frocks online. Here’s what got Instant Goddess smiling this week:

Photo 5. Hello Sunshine

Ted Baker Nim dress in summer dusk print neoprene approx.. $1142 reduced from $2090, Fashion Union v-neck shift dress with jewel embellished shoulders approx. $525 and Pencil dress with peplum hem in floral print scuba by ASOS approx. $680 all available on ASOS.

Once a jewel junkie, always a junkie

You know the Instant Goddess, she just can’t help herself when it comes to jewel encrusted items…and so these turquoise gem stone high leg sandals from River Island have to be worthy…oh and now I can’t stop thinking about them. Ho hum.

Photo 6. TandooriChicken

Always a fan of a low fat curry, this week Instant Goddess is going to give the BBC’s GoodFood Tandoori Chicken a whirl. And not only is it low in fat but it’s quick and easy to make. You need to marinade the chicken in advance (at least 1 hour) but once you’ve done this you’ll be able to whip this up and probably eat it, in the time that it takes a Hong Kong takeaway delivery to reach your door. So it’s over to the BBC’s GoodFood Tandoori Chicken.

Instant Goddess makes a jump for it…

Those who don’t jump will never fly…

This week Instant Goddess toys with and embraces the jumpsuit. No longer a dim and distant memory of your Mum wearing one circa 1980’…the jumpsuit, as I’m sure you’re aware, has made somewhat of a comeback. This time around they seem to be less constructed and look more comfortable, ideal for lounging on holiday, but equally there are glam options for evening. This is the Instant Goddess cream of the crop…

Warehouse zip front jumpsuit £60 from ASOS (delivery is free to HK and takes approx 10 days)

Multicoloured abstract print jumpsuit £48 River Island (delivery costs approx $120 and takes approx 10 days)

Izabel printed jumpsuit by Monsoon £39 approx $500 (Monsoon deliver to HK, orders take approx 10 days to arrive and shipping is free over £75 approx $900)

Floral print jumpsuit by Next $356 (Next direct deliver to HK, delivery is free over $200 and takes 4 working days – now that’s what we call service!)

Black jumpsuit by Next $385 – this would see you from pool to bar, just sling in a bit of bling in the beach bag and you’ll be ready to go before you can say make mine a frozen piña colada.

 A nod to A/W 14

If you’re super duper organised and want a couple of transitional pieces to carry you into next season, then Zara has the answer with these tops. And of course, Instant Goddess couldn’t resist a couple of accessories.

Above sleeveless printed top and guipere top both $399, gold mesh triangle necklace $499, black sunglasses with gold detail $199 all Zara

Jackie O

If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it. The Instant Goddess’ tried and tested formula of more embellishment the better. The Monsoon jaquard skirt and matching top below shouted Jackie O at me in that classy chic way.

Jenny jaquard skirt  and matching top in nude £59 and £69 respectively both from Monsoon

That’s it for this week Goddesses as this has been a labour of love completed from a sun lounger with limited Internet access but remember you are always, always worth it! And if you’re wondering where Instant Goddess is holed up…she’s at The Nam Hai Hoi An, Vietnam. And she highly recommends it. Until next time XX

Top of the Frocks

This week Instant Goddess is tired of the drab sale leftovers and definitely not ready for the only other in-store option which is the new autumn/winter 14 collections. It’s August…it’s still summer for goodness sake! We’re NOT ready for winter. We want MORE summer.

So, what is an Instant Goddess to do? Why, look online of course! And this week ASOS has definitely made the grade with some very fresh summer frock inspiration. And worthy of particular note is once again ASOS SALON, launched last year as part of the trend led and directional ASOS Collection, it’s designs are more runway than run of the mill giving a firm nod to a designer inspired look without the crude price tag.

Midi moment

While doing my hard yards for this blog, the midi skirt kept cropping up both online and on the high street. The suggestion seems to be that we should team the midi with a cropped top…alas I stopped showing off my midriff a long time ago, so it will be a fitted T or top firmly tucked in. It seems the richer the fabric the better whether that’s embroidered or a busy jacquard such as metallic floral and of course the Instant Goddess is all over that.

And the perfect accompaniment to the midi…a nice pair of heels, these are courtesy of Topshop and available in-store in Central or online.

Virgos Lounge

Discovered last summer, Virgos Lounge, has become a firm Instant Goddess favourite with its show stopper frocks, exquisite beading and winning prices. The wonder dress below has to be my favourite evening look of the moment…it’s called the “Taylor” and certainly does remind me of Hollywood starlet Liz Taylor in her heyday.

Virgos Lounge Taylor Dress approx $3000

Virgos Lounge delivers to Hong Kong for approx $120 and the items are sent by DHL so normally arrive within a week of ordering.

Praise where praise is due

Fair dos – it’s not all about the sales on the high street. Top Shop have culled their sale section and have some fab little dresses in store that will work now. Also, Causeway Bay ladies will be pleased to hear that after the success of opening its flagship store last summer in Central, Topshop has announced that it will be spreading the love and opening a new store in Causeway Bay in mid August to be located at 5F, Times Square, 1 Matheson Street, Causeway Bay.

The dresses above are available now in-store in Central.

This really works…

Now, this doesn’t often happen to me BUT when it does it’s definitely blogworthy…a beauty product that actually does what it says on the tin. Drum roll…

The blackhead eliminating daily scrub by Neutrogena really does work! There’s nothing worse than an Instant Goddess with an oily, black head ridden T-zone…but help is at hand thanks to this little concoction from Neutrogena . A marked decrease in blackheads and it’s cheap too! And most importantly available in Hong Kong in larger Mannings and Watsons.

Could we make a regular feature of this?!  Probably not as it really doesn’t happen that often.

Midweek Meal Inspiration

A blog post on summer frocks wouldn’t be complete without a summer salad…so this week it’s Mustard Griddled Chicken, Beetroot & Orange Salad courtesy of BBC GoodFood. This is not only deeeelicious but quick and easy to prepare as well.  Move over your commonplace lettuce and tomato combo…beetroot and orange really does work! But mind your frock…
